After watching episodes 1-4 on a Japanese website, I very was disappointed, bad acting/dialogue being the main offender. When the box set for Season Four came out I thought "What's the point in buying it?", that's how dire the first few episodes are. Luckily, my flatmate Giles bought it so I didn't have to worry about whether it was worth handing over my precious pounds sterling as he's kind enough to lend it to me. It's miraculous how good the season suddenly becomes after episode 4. It's like a the writers suddenly remembered they're good writers. There are plenty of unexpected plot twists and thrilling action scenes, reminiscent of season 2.
This is only part one of season four, the final season. It was split into two because of the writers strike in America. Depending on what you've read on what forum, part two is going to be epic. 4-6 of the 10 remaining episodes are rumoured to be feature length.
For those of you who don't watch Battlestar Galactica, you should. Although the concept of a war between Humans and Cylons (Robots created by humans who then rebelled) is a bit far fetched, this doesn't stop it from having some really gripping, gritty bits of drama. What BSG does is raise questions, similar to those we ask ourselves about current world issues, but places it in the neutral context of space. There's no wrong or right side in Battlestar Galactica. For all we know, the Cyclons could be the good guys.
