I stumbled across this video on fleet foxes MySpace.
The bit when you can her the girl on the left's voice reverberate through the forest makes the hair on the back of my neck stand on end. I can just imagine how magical it would be to go for a walk in the woods and come across these two singing.
There's something about harmonies that entrances me.
One of the reasons I got into metal was because of the harmonised guitar parts, usually thirds. Cheesy, melodic Iron Maiden riffs or brutal batterings of The Black Dahlia Murder, I see through the metal exterior and just get addicted to how complicated the harmonies are. I'm always amazed when one guitarist plays something that seems impossible to play and the other guitar matches it, tranposes it up/down a third/fifth/seventh and plays it in perfect sync with the other guitarist. It's a takes a great level of musicianship to pull it off, something I hope to have, in this life or the next.
When people sing in harmonies though, it has this raw natural edge to it. Something instruments can't achieve. The human voice when pushed to it's limits is amazing. I remember watching an episode of Newlyweds (the program about Jessica Simpson and that Nick Leshay post marriage) in which jessica simpson sung the american national anthem at a festival. When she hit a certain note, I remember getting this chill down my spine. It's a shame she makes shitty music because her voice is really strong.
Anyway, the two girls are called First Aid Kit. check them out here www.myspace.com/thisisfirstaidkit

fleet floxes are a big ol' deal in seattle. most people's claim to 15 minutes is, "i'm friends with the guys from fleet foxes". most of the time, this gets awkwardly injected into conversation. the fact has lost its luster as everyone came to realize that everyone else is friends with the guys from fleet foxes.
i really, really like this cover. it is very beautiful.
yeah they're getting big pretty much everywhere at the moment. not too sure how much i like them though. they're good but i feel they could so much better. seeing these two young girls take one of their songs, improve it and make it there own, says something about the production and realisation of fleet foxes songs.
