The Shining

I've just watched 'The Shining' for the first time, in the dark and with headphone ear plugs. Very scary movie. Although I thought it seemed to be rushed. After reading the book, which gradually builds up the tension, the movie seems to skip out quite a bit and guess it has to to avoid being 7 hours long. Even though the build up was the shortest bit it was done really well. The point at which I jumped the most was when 'TUESDAY' appeared on the screen. It scared the shit out of me. Not sure if I prefer the not so gruesome ending to the movie or not yet. I think I liked both.
What bemused me however was just how much of the build up information was sacrificed or shorten. It seemed as though the film was made for people who had read the book which I luckily just had. The history of jack's alcoholism is never mentioned in the movie yet it's key in the book. T however prefer the garden animals not being in the movie. They ruined the book for me. Just made the whole story seem implausible.
Kubrick's cinematography is amazing as always. You really get a sense if isolation and cabin fever. I spoke to my flatmate about what would you do if we were in a hotel together by ourselves without a tv or radio or books or any source of entertainment. I said i would probably try and hide from him for as long as I could. Just so i had something to do. Not in a malicious way at all. Can't remember what he said he do.
All in all, good film, good book, don't be a winter caretaker of a hotel unless you've got the internet and can watch bbc iplayer or youtube.
