I had just under half a rolls of a 36 exposure Velvia 100 film left in my OM-2 from an Installation of mine back in November. I totally forgot about it but remembered to take my camera out with me on a few occasions over the summer.

Taken from amongst the crowd during last Fridays (23/09/2011) Hello Mexico set supporting Kyte at The Bull & Gate in Kentish Town.They seem to get better and better each time I see them live.I would of got taken some wider shots but it the busiest I think I've ever seen The Bull & Gate so could barely move.

Giles on 120 film

I've been meaning to post this for about two weeks but I've really busy sitting around the house watching videos of cats ding funny things on YouTube. Now that I'm working it feels like I finally have enough time to post this. Same setup as the one shot on digital but it looks a million better because it's 120. I really need to use my Kiev more.

I always try to take a few sneaky photos when I'm doing a shoot of the in between moments. Basically the moments I'm not supposed to be shooting.
These are from a shoot I did for my friend Kali. You can check the photos on her website. It's not my usual style as I don't like using studio lights but a friend in need is a friend indeed.

Back in March, Matthew Randle had a show at HOME (there website isn't complete yet but have look anyway). He had all the lightbulbs taken out of the space and everyone was given a little LED torch. The torches on button had to held down to work so every now and then people would get tired fingers and the room would go completely black. It was brilliant way of filling the space. Like the work of his I've seen recently, very simple and very effective.
You may recognise the space from when I had a show there back in November. What do you mean it's too dark?

Giles Bunch: Video

So Giles finally got round to editing and uploading the video mentioned in the previous post. I don't think cinematography is my strong point. Also, that clicking sound is me adjusting the shutter speed / focus.
You should check out the other videos on Giles's (grammar?) Vimeo channel. I think he's the only artist I know who's video work isn't pretentious and he never takes himself too seriously.

Four months ago, almost to the day, it was my birthday. On my birthday I documented my flatmate/friend/peer/fellow gangsta/hustler Giles Bunch's work for a project he was involved in, run by UK Young Artists called Proposition Invitation Consequence.

He told me he'd upload the video soon and as soon as he does, I will post it here. In the meantime, got to his blog and ask him to upload it now.

Instax 500AF

I decided to buy an Instax 500AF, which are very hard to find (I only found 2 on eBay). "What's the difference between the Instax 200/Instax 210 and the Instax 500AF?" I here you ask.
Firstly, the 500AF has an auto-focus, unlike the 200/210 which have two fixed focal ranges: 0.6m - 3m and 3m - infinity. This gives a much sharper image as you actually have control on what the camera is focusing on.
Secondly, you can bypass the flash. The 200/210 only bypasses the flash when there's enough light. So you can't get and nice natural/low light images. Unlike the 500AF which gives nice images like the one below.

Allow Snappy Snaps

So despite knowing that Snappy Snaps is getting quite expensive nowadays, I went to one near where I was working for convenience. £10.25 for processing of a 36 exp film and 6x4 prints! Not only is that pretty outrageously expensive, but when I got home and scanned in some of the photos I noticed the negatives were badly scratched. That's Strike Three.
Strike One: Not cutting my negatives up for me and just giving me the roll taped together, whilst also printing out and trying to charge me for duplicates of photos (Mostly of my girlfriend at the time. One Hour Photo anyone?)
Strike Two: Giving me filtered and overly saturated prints (as in purple and green sky's) covered in loads of blue marks from the printer. Sorry, but your job is to process and print the pictures. Not to put your own artistic spin on my photos.
Me and Snappy Snaps are through. Three Strikes. You're out.

Last Sunday, they had an opening for their most recent show. They asked me to take photos of the work and the evening itself. This photo is my favourite one from the bunch. It's not the best picture I've taken but there is a nice quality to it.

EDIT: Just though I'd add that even though this looks filtered and edited, it's not. The only adjustment I made was to lower the temperature, get rid of that nasty hot fluorescent light.

Taken on my new Pentax Espio 115 using the panarama mode. Even though it just clips the frame at the top and bottom as apposed to stretching out the frame, it really like the feel cinematic feel you get. It makes somewhat mundane scenes look like something is about to happen.

Gang Of Hours Shoot

This is an outake from a shoot I had on Sunday which was the first on my new Canon 5D mark ii. What impresses me the the most about my new purchase is the way the sensor captures light. Unlike my previous DSLR (a canon 400D), the full frame sensor seems to replicate the way film would capture the light. You don't get get the tones you can get from using particular films but my new camera has definitely given me more option when it comes to shooting.

I've started taking my film to the big Sainsbury's in Haringey. £2.88 for day processing of 24 exposure film. Just under a fiver for one hour processing of a 36 exposure film. You might get the odd small scratch on a negative but Snappy Snaps usually scratch up your film too (plus them putting filters on the prints, grrr!).
I took my friend Sophie along as she needed to get a film done. Plus she'd never been to the big Sainsbury's. Took a commemorative photo with the last photo on the film.

I was recently very kindly given a Kiev 60 by my ex-girlfriends dad. He found it in a shop in the Ukraine for about £20! It’s in full working order apart from an unpredictable shutter. The mirror flips up and the shutter will go of somewhere between 1 to 10 seconds later. It seems to get quicker the more you use it so i’ll just have to take more photos.
I haven’t got a medium format scanner yet so these are scans of print I had done at Jessops, hence some weird marks on the photos.

This was taken on New Years Eve on our way down to Brighton. Klara made us vodka mixers to drink the train. She went for orange juice, I went for Irn-Bru.
On our way to the club I dropped my camera on the floor whilst getting boisterous with some chums. The back opened and the flash broke. I was worried I wouldn't see these photos becuase of all the light flooding in. Instead it's added something to the picture. Win.
